This is my first blog post, and I want it to welcome and inform you about my website and the ongoing blogs which will be created.

Purpose of Blog

I have three hopes for this blog:

  1. Create awareness of encephalopathy,

  2. Develop hope for recovery from encephalopathy, and,

  3. Share about my upcoming book, Leaving La-La Land, Escape to Reality, and the experience of writing and publishing while partially recovered from encephalopathy.

Encephalopathy refers to any disease or disorder that affects the brain
Encephalopathy refers to any disease or disorder that affects the brain

My story

I am considered partially recovered from Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome, which includes Wernicke Encephalopathy. I use the phrase "partially recovered" as encephalopathy permanently effects the brain leaving the patient with permanent physical and/or cognitive disabilities.

I am fortunate as I have recovered to a point where I can write and publish a book and engage in these conversations. Despite daily challenges like headaches, seizures, hallucinations and midline confusion, I am cognitively able to participate in dialogue and creative thought.

My experience with encephalopathy is captured in my upcoming book, Leaving La-La Land, Escape to Reality. This title comes from a comment my sister made, "he is in la-la land," reflecting my constant need to escape the hospital and the grasp encephalopathy.

Blog Content

Consistent with the purpose, I will attempt to focus on awareness, hope and my upcoming book. Initially I plan to start discussions on elements of encephalopathy such as confabulation, ideas to support recovery while focusing on both the patient and caregiver/family perspective.

I hope to gain insights, ideas and motivation from you, the reader, and comments/discussion you provide.

Blog Frequency

My hope is to focus on one topic or concept for two to four weeks, before moving on to another topic. I feel that this is important as my brain does not allow me to effectively multi-task, one of my brains disfunctions caused by encephalopathy.

How the blog may support you

Another hope is that the blogs provide thought-provoking content that stimulates your own ideas about dealing with encephalopathy, a life-changing disease.

I find that open dialogue increases my knowledge, stimulates growth and ideas, and often drives me to improvement. I hope that these blogs will do the same for you.

What to expect in the blogs

Ideas. Yes, each blog will provide ideas on how to work with this life altering encephalopathy disease.

Disclaimer

Much of information shared in my blogs are opinion and ideas. Although we are discussing a serious medical condition, my comments should not be considered medical advice. Each of us whom suffer from encephalopathy should have our own medical expert or experts.
